ABOUT Rebecca Johnson

It’s such a blessing to be able to combine two of my favorite things—art and animals, and create something very meaningful.  Our pets provide unconditional love and become dear companions and cherished members of the family.  A custom portrait can be a wonderful way to remember them.

I have always loved to draw and paint.  Over the years I have learned from many talented instructors and have attended various workshops and classes.  In 2015, I received my Pet Portrait diploma through the London Art College.  I continue to attend classes and seek to improve my work.  My specialties are oil, colored and graphite pencil and pastel.

My work is displayed at Cynthia Elliot Boutique in McKinney, Texas; The Cove in McKinney; Rover Resort in McKinney; Mutt Puddle in McKinney; Bier Gallery in Charlevoix, Michigan; Charlevoix Circle of Arts, and many pet loving homes and offices.

I work from your favorite photo, capturing the personality and expression of your pet.  Although dogs and cats are my typical subjects, I’ve painted horses, birds, and even a much-loved cow.  I’m always open to new challenges.

If you have a beloved pet it would be my great pleasure to capture their personality.

Another Satisfied Customer!

Niko the cat has become very attached to his portrait and his family often finds him sitting next to it!  I take that as a wonderful compliment. For this portrait, I used charcoal to get the very dark black coat, and colored pencil to showcase Niko’s amazing green eyes.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail!

My friend Andrea Hibbs took this photo in her own yard in McKinney, Texas!  I found myself smiling often as I drew this sweet face.   Although this bunny is not a pet, it’s a joy to draw or paint wildlife that reminds us of home!

Maple the Rescue Dog

After losing our little Shih Tzu in November, we adopted a sweet rescue dog.  She’s about two years old, weighs 35 pounds, and her breed is a mystery combination.  But she is wonderful–usually!   There was that formal dining room chair she chewed, and the bag of dark chocolate truffles that required a vet visit….but […]

I typically charge $250-$300 for an 8x10 or 9x12 portrait of a single pet on a simple background.  I work in oil, pastel, colored pencil, charcoal or graphite--whatever suits your needs.  Special requests such as multiple pets, larger sizes, or detailed backgrounds, are welcome and can be arranged.

The most important aspect of getting your perfect pet portrait is to provide a high quality, detailed photo to work from.  Many times a photo taken on a cell phone is fine, so feel free to text or email me what you have and we can discuss options.  Photos taken at the pet's level, preferably outdoors in good lighting, work best.  However, many of my customers are working with photos of a pet who has passed away, and I will do my best with whatever photos you have available.

Once the painting is complete, additional prints or note cards may be purchased to share with family and friends.
